Make your first API request.
Retrieve two SAM.gov notices with a short web request. Then check the returned records and source links.
1. Create your account
Start the 15-day trial and confirm your email. No payment card is required.
The trial includes 10,000 requests per calendar month, 1,000 per day, and 30 per minute. You can create three API keys.
2. Create an API key
Open API keys. Choose the search permission and copy the key when it appears.
Save it as the GOVBIZ_API_KEY environment variable in your local shell. Never put it in browser code or a shared file.
export GOVBIZ_API_KEY='paste-your-key-here'
3. Send a bounded request
cURL is a command-line tool for web requests. This example filters by NAICS code 541512 and asks for two records.
NAICS codes group businesses by industry. You can change this code or use another documented filter.
curl 'https://www.govbiz.ai/api/v2/opportunities/search?naics_code=541512&limit=2' \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $GOVBIZ_API_KEY"
4. Inspect the response
Read data.results for notices and citations for source links. Use data.total_count to see the number of matching records.
Check freshness.sam_ingest_age_seconds for the latest reported SAM ingestion age. Citation retrieval times describe this query, not the source publication time.
For the next page, increase offset by limit. This endpoint accepts up to 100 records per request.
View the captured response. Live results may differ as sources change.
Next steps
Create a table in Python, query from JavaScript, or connect a supported AI tool.
REST and MCP share your workspace’s request allowance. The trial ends without a charge. Choose a paid plan to keep API access.
